New News: Certification As Growth Curve Strategist

Last month, I was certified in a strategic growth curve process. It is the first tool I have experienced that puts headlights on the future for the CEO to see what’s required for the next stage of growth simply based on the number of employees (brilliant). I do quite a few strategic planning sessions, quarterly offsites, culture alignment workshops, etc., but this give leadership teams the edge in planning.

First, I took my own company through it and found our top 5 (out of 27) challenges and the exact steps I need to take to get the business to its next stage of growth. It also showed me how many managers vs executives I will need in the near future as well as how my leadership style will have to change and when. We a took a battery of online assessments and the data that came out was, well, “telling.”

If you are interested I would love to tell you more about it. But thought I’d share the fun press release that came out last week!

The Cost Of Living Your Passion

I just got confirmation that tomorrow we are streaming our 4th Annual LEXI Women’s Leadership Summit live online.

LEXI stands for Leaders Engage to eXchange Ideas. Our mission is to connect, equip and mentor women in both their professional and personal lives. We have 12 speakers and over 100 women leaders ready to exchange ideas and grow to their next level. The fact that we sold out and able to offer the live stream is amazing to me mainly because of all the obstacles we encountered along the way.

The Cost of Passion

I woke up inspired to share with you about passion and the cost of living a life with purpose. Everyone wants to know their purpose. This becomes more and more clear to me everyday as I work with leaders across the United States. In the last 10 days, I worked with 4 EO chapters. The common theme when you get down to the vulnerable space is purpose, legacy, and passion. What if you don’t know it? What does it take to find it? What does one do to define it?

What I want to discuss is the price tag to live it.

My purpose is to help others live their purpose. It is why I wrote Clarity: Focusing on What Matters and frankly why I write this newsletter. It is why I get up out of bed. It is why I am passionate about offering myself to everyone I can to help them along the path to that authentic truth and abundant life. The joy of connecting with people and then watching them catch glimpses of the light coming on is unbelievable.

However, there is also great pain in the process because you have to get real and peeling those layers back causes people to run and short-cut their journey. Others commit to the process, but the progress can be slow as the proverbial two steps forward, one step back is a reality.

Obstacles Are Not Stop Signs

With LEXI, I hit so many obstacles that I considered canceling it at least a dozen times. For one month, we experienced every imaginable problem there could be, including a location change just 10 days before the event! Obstacle after obstacle had to be overcome and I am so busy with my real job of running my company that it has been 30 days of living on fumes. WHY?

EO Reno Tahoe MegaMinder Group Gets Award

Why not just cancel it? Because I am passionate about it. I believe in it. I feel like I must do it to help people become leaders of purpose. When you believe in something strongly, you can’t see obstacles as stop signs you must believe in the end game. Gratefully, I had a partner in this endeavor, Debra Trappen, who has the same passion and complimentary gifts who was able to step in when I was weak. I couldn’t have made it through those weeks without her.

Who Shares Your Passion?

Living your purpose results in living with passion. What I find is my purpose has not changed but what I am passionate about during a certain season of life does. In this season, who shares your passion? It is truly necessary to have partners that share what you are passionate about to carry you through the tough times.

Here is the truth…

There will always be tough times. Pursuing your passion and what matters most will always come with a cost. There is a price to pay. Because nothing that matters comes easy. Sure it might be simple, but it simply isn’t easy. Overcoming adversity is a requirement. Sometimes we fare better than other times. However, there is no better reward in all the world than knowing you are making a difference in the life of another. What I have found is that the more clarity I have, the more passionate I get. Therefore, the bigger the assignment thus the higher the price. It is how we build character and prepare for the next big thing.

Saturday is my next big thing!

LEXI is something I would like to do in other cities. I have vision for it to be “TED‘s Girlfriend” if you will. We will have video content available for all leaders and this group of women leaders on Saturday will trail blaze the path. Please join us online at 8:30am PDT sharp and/or join in via the twitter hashtag #LEXI13.  If you want to take the EQ assessment which I will be debriefing at 1:00pm PDT, then email me now and we will get you set up for a discounted fee.

Please live your passion! Please pay the price! It’s worth every penny!

The world needs your leadership – so LET’S DO THIS!

Your Coach,

Quotes on Purpose

The poet Matthew Arnold made a prediction in the 1800s: “If ever the world sees a time when women will come together purely for the good of humanity, it will be a power as the world has never seen.”

Purpose creates an opportunity for value creation. Passion follows purpose. Passion creates energy. – Garrett Gunderson

The purpose of life is to discover your gift. The meaning of life is to give your gift away. - David Viscott

If you have a purpose in which you can believe, there’s no end to the amount of things you can accomplish. - Marian Anderson

You need to have a vision. Having a vision is the first step toward having the life you want. Purpose gives meaning to your life and changes your attitude and perspective about life. – Unknown

Taking action is how you GIVE your gift and live a life of true service to yourself and others. And that doesn’t mean that your life’s work has to be something that seems grand and noble. The real key to being of service and living your purpose is simply to do what you LOVE to do — whatever it may be. –  Rebecca Fine

MVP: Announcing Mary Beth King – TLC newest coach

It is a true honor to writing paper present to you Mary Beth King, our newest TLC coach. When I met Mary Beth and she shared her coaching philosophy, I thought, “Wow, she’s someone who actually sees this profession like I do…interesting!” As we furthered our conversation, I knew we needed to partner together, and I asked her to join our coaching staff. Within two months, she has not only impressed me, but our clients are raving about her and getting the results they desire! Please welcome Mary Beth King to our team (and if anyone on your team is looking for a coach now is the time! If not now, when?)

Here’s Mary Beth …

Last month, I sat on a plane next to a woman on the way to her little sister’s 90th birthday. Yes, really. She’s writing an autobiography, and she told me story after story about her life, as amazing as it is long. At one point, she paused and added fact-of-factly, “You realize, I’ve lived several lifetimes.”

I can’t say that yet, but I have begun to think of my life in decades, give or take a year here or there.

Two decades growing up. Four decades being a spouse. Three decades being a parent. A half a decade being a grandparent.

A half a decade teaching math and science. Two decades working with doctors and hospitals to provide training. One decade professionally-certified coaching.

But you probably don’t care about any of that. Except to wonder if it makes me old. (It doesn’t!) You want to know who I am and whether or not it matters to you. (It does!)

I actually may be the only person in your world, including you, who believes that you are naturally creative, resourceful, and not broken. Yes, you know better than anyone around you how broken some of your relationships are, some of your teams are, some of your “systems” are, and some of your thoughts and behaviors are. But you, my friend, are not broken. As a human being, you are by nature creative, resourceful, and not broken and therefore, capable of growing. Capable of learning. Capable of changing.

That is the core of what I bring to coaching: the belief that you are never stuck – ever. Coaching is about exploring what is working and what is not. It’s about discovering your options where it’s not working, and making choices in line with what is important to you. It’s about not settling for a relationship, or a career, or a life that is half working. It’s about always moving toward success.

I’m a no-nonsense, no-judgment coach. I ask the questions that reveal what’s going on today, while always focusing on future that you are creating, the changes you are making, the goals you are reaching.

That’s who I am. Who are you?

What’s working? What’s not?

Mary Beth King

On Track or Derailed? Five Reasons Goals Fail

My grandpa was a railroad engineer, so I grew up loving trains. From real ones to the models around the Christmas tree, I love to watch them roar along their clack-ity track. To this day, I love to walk along an endless railroad track balancing on the rail to see how far I can get before slipping off and then trying it again.

Because of this fondness, the thought of a train derailing is troubling. The image of that massive strength and power of those fierce engines lying helpless in a field or worse, in heap of metal, disturbs me.

Derailments are far and few between but when they happen, it's a big deal. While they are unintentional, you can count on authorities investigating to get to the source. Why? So the tragedy won’t happen again.

Are You Derailed or On Track?

We are 22 days into 2013. How many of you already feel derailed in your New Year goals? If you are feeling derailed or simply not satisfied with your journey so far, let’s take a look at why you are off-track — and get you back on it.

Why Goals Fail

1. The WHY Is Not Identified.

WHY do you want this goal? You have to start with something bigger than your goal. You must get to your purpose — “the why” you exist. Your values should dictate your goals, not the other way around. I love True Life Coaching’s course, Life 301, because we dig deep to identify the barriers to living your values and only set goals after your values are identified. In business, core values and purpose statement are essential for your culture and the why people work for you.

2. The WHAT Is Not Defined.

Once your WHY is identified, then you need a plan to live it out. This is your defined vision and mission. WHAT is it you want to accomplish in order to live your WHY? WHAT is needed? WHAT is wanted? WHAT will you do? In business, this is your strategic plan, from the five-year plan to the one-year goals to the quarterly theme to every single person on the team knowing their WHAT. This a big part of my work with executive teams and is absolutely key to organizations… and to you personally.

3. The HOW Is Not Clear.

Now that you know WHAT you are going to do to fulfill the WHY, it is time to get very clear on HOW you will accomplish it. WHEN Is Not Serious.

Action steps to accomplish your goals must have a “by when” assigned to it. When the HOW is not broken down into action steps with dates attached to the steps, it is in grave danger of derailment. Solution: Calendar Management! Put the due dates in with appropriate reminders included, schedule blocks of non-negotiable time to work on the next step, and secure white space so you can think clearly. (Confession: This is my personal downfall!)

5. The WHO is not aligned.

Last but far, far from least you must get the right people in your life to help you achieve your goals. This may mean dismissing Negative Nellie or Downer Don from your circle of influence. It may require re-evaluating your culture, allowing those who do not align with your direction to exit gracefully and then attracting people who appreciate and support your WHY gratefully. Alignment of the right people doing the right thing in the right time for the right reason is sheer bliss and is actually quite simple – it’s just not easy!

The First Step — Today

So what is one thing you could do today to get yourself back on track? For me, it is calendar management. I need to block some time out, and so I am going to go do that right now. How about you? You are all smart leaders on this list. Listen to your gut and take two minutes — set the timer on your phone to commit and calendar your one thing! Right now!

If you do not subscribe to our blog or daily quotes you are missing out and I invite you to get involved in the conversation today.

Here’s to 2013 being the best year yet!

Your Coach,

P.S. Hey, if anyone is in Reno on Thursday, January 24, I have been asked to do a lunch-and-learn on this very topic, so if you are in town please join me – it’s perfect timing.

Fruitful Thoughts on Pruning

Finally, after four years, my fruit trees have produced results! It’s as if the recession that hit the economy had also walloped my 4 little fruit trees. Now, with a wonderfully abundant crop of fruit, I have been able to restock my freezer, share with my neighbors, and eat to my heart’s content. Way better than the four apples and eight peaches I harvested the year before!

Now I must prune.

Here is the conundrum in business and in life. After a time of fruitfulness, results, and profitability, you must prune. And it hurts.

Prior to this year, I never bothered to prune my fruit trees. I just cut down the “suckers” and cut off the “runners” and walked away. Now that I have seen what they can do, I want more. What will it take to have more fruit next year?

The same question can apply to your business. If you want better results in 2013, you need to re-evaluate operations now. The question is, how?

In my next post, I’ll discuss more of the whys and hows of pruning. What have been your experiences in this area? Share with us! Now I’m off to eat an green apple!

In simple terms, a personal brand is how you make people FEEL when they interact with you. How do people “explain you” when you are not in the room? How are people experiencing YOU? Here is what is NOT personal brand: It is not a logo, your website, your blog or what you do for a living. Nope… it is not the clothes you wear, the car you drive, the city you live in, or the degrees and awards have on the wall. Sure, these things can be considered a part of your personal brand, however they are not, in and of themselves, a definition of your brand.
